They were divided into two groups. The first group was sent to a sawmill while the second group built the bridges. Howell was assigned to the sawmill detail. One night, a POW escaped from the building being used as a barracks by the POWs. The Japanese decided that the five men who slept to the right and the five men who slept to the left of the man could have stopped his escape.
